Past

*This explains Hayate's past, which accually plays a part in the storyline of the series, this having spoliers for the series. You have been warned*

Before Himeno became Pretear, there was another Pretear:Takako. Unlike Himeno, Takako was easily frightened by the monsters she battled, thus Hayate promised to always protect her, so she would feel more confident and safe. The day Himeno's parents were married, Takako told Hayate that she loved him. Unluckily for Takako, Hayate did not return her feelings. Due to the rejection, Takako was enveloped in sadness and anger, which caused her to turn into Saihi. The Liefe knights were forced to entrap Takako in a large tree (in the anime) and seal her away. From that day forth, the area that Takako was sealed in was called "The Sealing Grounds." In the manga, she was ensnared in a large crystal, rather than a tree.

Hayate constantly blames himself for this, because Takako was the one who loved him, not anyone else. This also adds to the reason why Hayate does not want another Pretear. He thinks that if they get another Pretear, history will repeat itself, and the new Pretear would become Saihi as well.
