In the beginning of the story, Hayate is against finding a Pretear. Why is that?

Well, going to the Past section of the site, remember that there was a former Pretear before Himeno, Takako. Hayate is afraid that if they get another Pretear, the new Pretear would turn into Saihi, just like Takako, so he tries to push Himeno away. Later, he starts to give in to helping Himeno, thus testing her (in episode 3). Hayate gives Himeno so much trouble in that episode, not because he wants her to try and give up, but he wants her to become a better Pretear, which in the end, she turns out to be, by becoming the White Pretear.
